Lock Bumping

Lock Bumping image

Lock bumping (for which bump keys are used) is basically a variety of lock picking technique for opening what is known as a “pin tumbler” lock, which is a lock mechanism that utilises pins of different lengths to stop the lock from opening unless you’re in possession of the correct key, which then will align the pins in just the right positions in order for the lock to be opened. So, the idea behind lock bumping is to use a specially designed bump key is to simulate the positioning of the correct key (when it in fact is not the correct key), by using a technique called “bumping”. This is the process through which the key is “bumped” into the lock in such a fashion so as to move the pins into just the right position so that the lock can be turned and then opened, thus obtaining the desired result.

One bump key is usually enough to work on all locks of this variety, but a wide selection is available if you feel the need to test out your skills or to refine your locksmith art and hone your professional abilities.
